Interns

This week I have an intern with me and one more next week.  I am excited to have them with me out in dialysis. I feel I shine a little more out in dialysis and I hope they can see how passionate I am about this part of the nutrition field. I wish I had more time with them to show them the joys of working in renal nutrition.

I am now up to 66 patients.  Getting closer to 100 everyday.  I also finished designing my Albumin Hockey board.  Labs are now in so when I get back tomorrow I will be fully completing the board.  As soon as that is done, I will post a picture both on here and Twitter.

I am also in the process of checking out some new information for patients.  Abbott's Kidney Club is great and you get a free 4 pack of Nepro.  Once my other materials come in, I will get back to you about the verdict on that one.  You can check out the Kidney Club on www.nepro.com.

Everyone stay healthy this season!

Must Be Doing Something Right

So for all you renal RD's out there who work in a dialysis unit, I am sure you draw mid-month labs for phosphorus.  At my unit, we look at Phos over 7 and really try our best to give these clients a little extra attention.  My list has been running between 5-8 patients.  Well this month, I got it down to 3! Yes 3! To me it is unbelievable.  I just hope it had something to do with the board I set up.  As mention in the previous post, my clients seemed to really like the interaction and were always asking me if their acorn was in the tree.

I took a sneak peak at our numbers for October and how we did meeting our targets.  Alb went up but we are still not meeting goal.  I am in the process of setting up my hockey themed board.  Hopefully, this will motivate my clients just as the Acorn Board did.  Once I am done, I will post pictures on here and Twitter(@AspiringRenalRD).

I am really enjoying my time out in dialysis.  I knew I was going to love it.  I am very grateful I was given this opportunity. Love my new renal family!

It's Been Awhile

So it has been awhile since I last posted something. Things have gotten away from me lately.  I have been wanting to write something but have been forgetting.

I am very happy about my Phosphorus Incentive Board.  My clients are asking me where their acorn is on the board.  It makes me so happy they are actually looking for them.

Now we have not been meeting our Albumin goals for 2 months and actually, we went down this month.  So I decided to do another board since the clients seem to enjoy it.  I am going to try to a sports related themed board. I think it should go over well.

I also attended Quality Renal Insights Network 3 Annual Meeting this past Thursday.  I had a great time and learned some new information.  I hope for next year I can present a poster and represent my clinic, who I feel should get some recognition for the awesome job they do.

I can not wait to finish my STAR program at work and see what my findings are in my PI project (that will be for another posting!)

Keep following!

Improving Phosphorus

For all you renal dietitians out there, you all know about QI and having network goals to meet.  Phosphorus is one of those goals that we meet and then we don't.

QI is one thing I find very interesting in the dialysis unit. I just may be the only one! : )

I like trying to problem solve why this one client's phosphorus is going up and down or always high.  I can only try to imagine how it feels to be a dialysis patient and have all these diet restrictions.  I try my best to make learning about the components of the diet as interesting as I can.  (Hence, the phosphorus board)

Another one of my ideas, is starting to provide a mid-month phosphorus report card.  I hope with having this information in print for my client's, it will help them track their progress. We'll see how it goes!

Phosphorus Board

I finished my Fall Phosphorus Board.  I made the acorns a little to big, so I am going to rotate the different shifts on the board.

If my clients are in the normal range for phosphorus, their acorn will be in the tree safe from the squirrel.  Once their phosphorus is high, it drops to be "collected" by the squirrel.

I hope this is a fun and interactive way to get client's attention about their phosphorus levels. So far, reception has been good.
